McCarthy, who served as EPA Administrator under the Obama administration and as the White House Climate Advisor to President Biden, has a long and storied career in environmental service. Throughout her years of public service in both Republican and Democratic administrations, McCarthy is credited for her common-sense strategies and ability to work across the aisle, with states, communities, business leaders, and the labor community, to tackle our nation’s toughest environmental challenges. She was a leader in creation of the most ambitious action on climate in U.S. history, supported by the climate and clean energy provisions in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act. Her work helped establish U.S. climate leadership on a global stage and strive toward ambitious U.S. national targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions. She also served as President and CEO of the environmental advocacy group Natural Resources Defense Council. The talk will be include a short presentation and informal conversation with IU’s Janet McCabe who served as Director of the Office of Air Quality with McCarthy during her first term as EPA Administrator and subsequently as Deputy Administrator of the EPA under the Biden Administration. McCabe served as Director of the IU Environmental Resilience Institute and is currently Professor of Law at the McKinney School of Law at IU-Indianapolis.
